The 1841 census return for Woking is much smaller than those for later years principally because of the population explosion that took place in those later years and particularly for Woking, the shifting of the centre of the old town from what is now Old Woking to Woking Common in 1838 with the arrival of the railway.

The size of the return does, however, make the picture of the population and its occupations then much more easy to appreciate than today’s expanded modern town of Woking.
